A first of its kind City Maps Gallery portal developed by the City of Bayswater has been recognised as the “Most Effective Government Solution” at WA’s most prestigious ICT Awards event while also being a crowd favourite with not only local residents, but also international viewers.
Through the City’s Maps Gallery, residents have been able to find essential information and compare data in one spot, allowing residents of the City to work through business, educational and private activities with minimal complexity.
Rod Woodford – Manager Asset and Mapping Services at the City of Bayswater – explains that the designed and developed-in house technology is revolutionising the way the City delivers services, exchanges information and uses technology to achieve better government.
“Over 80% of the City of Bayswater’s operations contain a spatial component and for an untrained person, spatial information can be difficult to comprehend,” said Rod.
“Given the volume of information needed to be shared and the importance of this information to our community, there was a need to streamline processes and make such information easy to use and understand.”
Rod and his team designed and developed the City Maps Gallery in house, and built it around the ESRI ArcGIS model. Throughout the build process, the team made sure the Gallery was developed with an innovative, easy to use, engaging, up to date and relevant mindset.
“The intention all along was to create an information geospatial portal that will streamline communications with the community and organisations,” said Rod.
“The result is an easy to comprehend mapping apps to access a variety of City thematic maps that include relevant state agency geospatial data feeds, such as Landgate, Main Raods WA and Bureau of Statistics in one location.”
The free to use City Maps Gallery is accessible via the Council’s website and also on mobile devices. Some of the app’s functionalities include information on local facility finder – public toilets, dog exercise areas, playgrounds – through to other bigger ticket items such as district town planning scheme, property and 3D mapping.
To date the app receives 70,000 hits annually and the community feedback has been highly positive, using the information to make informed decisions on everyday or big topics such as land purchases through to traffic routes.
“Our 2018 Perceptions Survey indicated that the City Maps Gallery is one of the most useful and valued services provided by the City,” said Rod.
“Residents now have the ability to query multiple data sets in seconds, gaining access to information from various agencies. This in turn has increased efficiency of interactions – removing time consuming face-to-face and telephone exchanges for time poor residents – and essentially reduced red tape.”
“Importantly, by aligning the public portal with the internal portal means all of the City’s staff can assist our community members faster and better.”
The City Maps Gallery’s innovation was recently recognised at the Western Australian IT and Telecommunications Alliance (WAITTA) Awards, winning the “Most Effective Government Solutions” Award and recognised at the national iAwards recently in Melbourne.
The uniqueness of the project have seen local agencies , City of Perth, Cockburn and Fremantle, Department of Planning, Public Transport Authority and Main Roads WA – requesting demonstrations of and learnings from the City Maps Gallery.
