In 1899 Charles H. Duell, the Commissioner of the US patent office in 1899, is said to have written to the Government recommending they close the office stating: “everything that can be invented has been invented.”
This is not true, of course, but even Ronald Reagan’s script writer was fooled enough to put it into one of his speeches, heralding the beginning of the urban legend.
However, the thought has some currency, because well before that, in 1843, Patent Office Commissioner Henry Ellsworth made a report to Congress in which he said, “the advancement of the arts, from year to year, taxes our credulity and seems to warn of the arrival of that period when human improvement must end.” 819 patent applications
Since Ellesworth and Duell’s time, we have seen human improvements such as penicillin, the aeroplane, the television, microwave ovens, and the modern motor car. Some lesser considered advances include such conveniences such as the humble zipper, wheels on suitcases, and teabags.
Of the information technology nature, we have seen the advent of CDMA, the Internet, the personal computer, the mobile telephone, and the satellite. These laid the groundwork for the more modern innovations that may or may not improve our lives, but certainly has changed the way humans live and survive on this planet.
