What is SWAN Systems?

Developed in 2016, SWAN Systems was borne out of the frustration of its founders who recognised that there was a lack of irrigation and soil nutrient data to help the agriculture sector navigate unpredictable weather conditions, strict environmental compliance and challenging economic factors.

“As specialists in the irrigated agricultural sector, we at SWAN Systems recognised the importance of helping farmers and growers to be smarter in their water and fertiliser use so that they are able to optimise their farm yields and outputs,” commented Rod Campbell, Executive Director of SWAN Systems.

Rod and his two co-founders – Tim Hyde and Ivor Gaylard – came up with SWAN Systems – a software as a service product giving farmers, growers and other users optimal scheduling for irrigation and nutrient applications at their sites.

How does SWAN Systems work?

SWAN Systems uses multiple data streams – including soil and crop characteristics, water budgets, irrigation system details and weather data sources – with proprietary algorithms to create a rolling seven day forecast that informs users when is the best time to water and fertilise their specific sites.

“The basic concept of our technology is simply to give the plants or crop exactly what it needs, when it needs it,” explained Rod.

“The benefits that our farmers, growers and other users see with the data they get include material water savings, increased yields and improved crop quality.”

“In addition, SWAN Systems gives all our users, at the touch of a button, a great reporting tool that shows they are complying with increasing environmental compliance and social licence obligations.”

“This capability is of course so valuable, creating time efficiency and cost effectiveness for many time poor farmers and growers.”

SWAN System’s ability to communicate with all types of hardware – meaning users can use their existing sensors without the expense of installing new equipment – and its data rich interface of both irrigation and nutrient modules has ensured that this agritech software is in strong, continued demand across all sectors.

What is SWAN Systems doing now?

“We started with an agricultural focus but soon realised there was an interest and need for SWAN Systems across all sectors, such as public open space, sporting fields, golf courses and water utilities supplying treated water,” commented Rod.

“The current drought conditions across large parts of Australia has also meant that there has never been a stronger focus and need for better water management systems.”

What’s next for SWAN Systems?

The future is exciting for SWAN Systems as the team focuses on developing bolt-on projects to their base platform that will expand the product offering and further innovate the irrigation industry.

“One example of an exciting current project is our work on automating the watering schedules, which contributes to optimal soil moisture conditions,” said Rod.
