Sustainable Platform – an online database developed in WA, provides investors with valuable information to make decisions on social and environmental issues – has been used by funds with AUD $3 Trillion under management.
The digital solution has received State and worldwide recognition, as a finalist for the 27th Incite Awards (WA’s most prestigious ICT Awards program), the international Responsible Business Awards and was described as a “great resource!” by the United Nations SDSN that developed the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Mark Andrich – Founder & CEO of Sustainable Platform – first came up with the idea for the online database when he wanted to invest sustainably himself, but found it hard to find the right information to compare companies and base his decisions on.
“One of the issues I found investors often complain about when they want to embrace sustainability is that there is not enough comparable data on portfolio stocks or whole market sectors,” explained Mark.
“With an increased focus on sustainable development – meeting today’s needs without taking from others or the environment – I thought it was more important than ever to have the right data to help make informed decisions that also reduces investment risks.”
Mark collaborated with some of WA’s leading academics, as well as his former hedge fund boss, to come up with a way to measure and compare companies’ sustainability performances by using existing information rather than relying on them to issue sustainability reports.
So in 2017 Sustainable Platform was launched – providing super funds and hedge funds with the world’s largest database of companies measured for their sustainability level.
“Sustainable Platform is a science based solution to calculate the contribution that over 17,000 global companies make to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” explained Mark.
“Our purpose is to provide the right information to allow institutions to make decisions on social and environmental issues, independent of the financial returns.”
“The data on our platform is gathered and updated on at least a quarterly basis and the SDGs contribution is analysed and calculated with the help of AI and quantum mechanics theory.”
The platform has been used by many funds, including WA Super – to help choose the manager for its Sustainable Investment Option – and also two of the largest funds in Norway.
“There are a lot of so-called ”sustainable”, ”ethical” and ”responsible” investment products. Our technology helps people and funds to tell which ones are and which ones aren’t true to label” said Mark.
“Companies want to know how they can align themselves to an authentically sustainable future. Sustainable Platform helps pension funds with independent data to help choose which fund it will award the mandate to.”
With more funds and investors adopting sustainable development as one of their key criteria for investing in companies, Sustainable Platform is continually further developing and innovating.
“We are always adding companies and technology to the platform so that we can provide more tools for our customers to use,” said Mark.
“Recently we also signed a partnership with Australia’s largest fund research house – Lonsec – to have our data and metrics used in financial planning software and for fund ratings.”
